Dermatopathology

Dermatopathology is a specialized field of pathology that involves the diagnosis of skin diseases through the study of skin biopsies. Dermatopathologists must be highly trained in both pathology and dermatology to be able to diagnose hundreds of types of skin diseases, each with their own unique cause and clinical appearance.

Note to Physicians: The unique histologic appearance of most skin diseases can require examination under a microscope for an accurate diagnosis. A dermatopathologist is essential in diagnosing skin diseases. Sometimes these diseases can have a severe negative impact on a patient's life, such as lupus erythematosus and psoriasis, and some can be fatal, such as malignant melanoma and toxic necrolysis.

SEP's Dr. Chris Kligora is a board-certified, fellowship-trained dermatopathologist who reads the majority of skin lesion and rash cases and is available for consults.
